Le 4 décembre 2005, dans une parfaite unanimité, les Responsables politiques ivoiriens, appuyés par la Communauté internationale, ont décidé de me confier la direction du Gouvernement de Transition issu de la Résolution 1633 du Conseil de Sécurité des Nations-Unies. Ma mission consistait à mener la COTE D’IVOIRE à des élections justes, ouvertes et transparentes après avoir conduit avec succès les processus de DDR d’identification, de réunification du pays.

Dès la formation de mon gouvernement le 28 décembre 2005, j’ai bénéficié de l’appui de tous ceux qui voulaient voir notre pays sortir de la situation désastreuse où l’avait plongé la guerre fratricide à l’origine de la division du territoire national en deux et qui a causé tant de malheurs et de drames.

A tous ceux qui m’ont apporté leur soutien tout au long de cette aventure délicate mais exaltante, je me dois d’exprimer ma profonde gratitude au moment où je quitte mes fonctions de Premier Ministre. Sans leur appui, rien n’eût été possible en raison de l’atmosphère tendue dans laquelle j’ai dû exercer mes activités.

A tout Seigneur, tout honneur, je rends grâce en premier lieu au Tout-Puissant qui m’a donné la force d’affronter les écueils et les périls, sans me laisser gagner par le découragement. La messe d’action de grâce à laquelle nombre d’entre vous ont pris part le 19 avril 2007 a été célébrée dans cette intention.

Je me suis empressé, dès la cessation de mes fonctions, d’adresser des lettres de remerciements aux Chefs d’Etat et de Gouvernement qui ont accompagné, pendant 15 mois, mes efforts de recherche de la paix en Côte d’Ivoire. J’ai découvert à leur contact que la politique peut faire bon ménage avec le souci du bien public.

Mais à vous, la grande masse de mes compatriotes, anonymes ou non, qui avez placé votre espoir dans le succès du Gouvernement de réconciliation nationale, je n’ai pu exprimer ma reconnaissance pour vos marques constantes de confiance et de solidarité. Je voudrais, à travers ces lignes, vous faire savoir que je n’ai pas oublié votre contribution irremplaçable aux avancées que j’ai pu obtenir.

Les épreuves ont été nombreuses et difficiles, vous en êtes témoins ! Mais grâce à la ferveur des espoirs que vous ne cessiez de crier et de me communiquer, vous m’avez donné la force de persévérer. Grâce à vous, je n’ai pas cédé à la tentation de renoncer quand le poids des outrances devenait excessif hélas. Mon insouciance des blessures d’amour-propre, c’est à vous que je le dois. J’ai compris, à votre contact, que toute charge publique en particulier politique est une croix qu’il faut porter avec courage. De cette leçon magistrale, je ne vous remercierai jamais assez. Du courage j’en suis rempli.

Tout au long de mon mandat, je me suis enrichi d’expériences qui me seront extrêmement utiles pour le futur ; ces expériences viennent s’ajouter à celles que j’ai emmagasinées pendant près de trois décennies de responsabilité dans la gestion de notre monnaie. Au demeurant, ces expériences ont conforté mes convictions profondes et confirmé la ligne de conduite que je me suis imposée dans l’exercice de mes fonctions. Je devais demeurer, ainsi que je l’ai fait, à équidistance de toutes les chapelles et de toutes les factions, car mon rôle était d’apaiser les passions, de rétablir la confiance et d’arrimer les uns aux autres tous les particularismes qui étaient motifs à de constantes confrontations. Faire en sorte que chacun consente à entendre au-delà de sa seule voix, que chacun accorde sa confiance à chacun et à tous ses concitoyens, que tous, enfin, nous entretenions un dialogue permanent entre nous et entre nos regroupements d’intérêts partisans, tels étaient mes objectifs. Ainsi j’entendais préparer les esprits et les cœurs à la nécessaire et indispensable réconciliation.

Je voulais que notre destin commun se nourrisse de nos différences, que la paix soit érigée, comme le sage en avait fait le rêve, en règle de notre vie au sein de notre communauté nationale.

Si, parfois, la propension à vouloir imposer la pensée unique, ainsi que le droit du plus fort ou du plus rusé, ont semé le doute parmi vous, jamais le désespoir ne s’est insinué dans vos esprits. Nous sommes un peuple tolérant, assez humble pour ne pas croire qu’il détient la vérité.

Malheureusement, notre tradition de l’honneur a connu un net relâchement, car dans certaines circonstances, les calomnies, les insultes, les demi-vérités et les mensonges se sont répandus ; ils ne m’ont pas épargné moi-même. J’ai accepté sans mot dire. Je souhaite que ceux d’entre vous qui se sont livrés à cet exercice favori comprennent qu’ils doivent emprunter un autre chemin.

Je serais heureux si, tirant les leçons de notre passé récent peu glorieux, nous mettions un terme définitif à la prospérité de ces vilains sentiments qui détruisent l’harmonie construite à coups de compromis et de concessions mutuelles. Ce sera le ciment sur lequel nous bâtiront la NOUVELLE COTE D’IVOIRE.

Pour ma part, j’ai quitté mes fonctions sans aucun ressentiment, avec la conviction du devoir accompli en toute bonne foi. J’ai transmis le relais à une compétence qui poursuivra avec bonheur, je le souhaite, l’œuvre entamée par le Premier Ministre Seydou Diarra et poursuivie par moi-même.

J’ai été, très tôt, je suis et demeurerai un citoyen engagé au service de la Côte d’Ivoire et de l’Afrique. Et, comme tel, je ne marchanderai pas mon soutien à tout effort sincère pour ramener la paix.

Je souhaite que mes compatriotes en fassent de même afin que, ensemble nous offrions une chance à la COTE D’IVOIRE, notre pays à tous.

J’ai souvent demandé que l’on ne tue pas l’espoir. Je n’ai pas toujours été entendu. Pourtant je veux persister. Ne tuons pas l’espoir.

La PAIX est un bien public précieux. Elle ne s’accommode pas de haine. Elle n’exclut pas. Elle enveloppe et inclut. Elle ne fait pas bon ménage avec les discriminations. Elle s’accomplit dans la sincérité des cœurs et des esprits. La Nation Ivoirienne a besoin de tous ses fils et filles. Toutes et tous doivent répondre présents à son appel.
